Conservatives Increase Pesticide Levels Email Print

If you ever doubted that 'the devil is in the details, here's an example. 'Hormonization' is going to poop on your fruits and veggies. New rules will allow more pesticide residues on the produce you buy. The Harper Government spin looks like this: Allowing more pesticides doesn't mean they will actually be there. Feel ok about that?

Under the guise of the "Security and Prosperity Partnership" "a wide-ranging plan to streamline regulatory and security protocols across North America," Harper continues to downgrade Canadian standards and sovereignty for Wall Street.

Canada will now allow more pesticide residues on fruit and vegetables to avoid 'trade irritants' with the U.S. Full story here. Or here

Pesticides are implicated in birth defects of genitalia, cancers, and mental illnesses. Studies increasingly has show that the damage is done at lower levels than previously imagined possible.

A little more from that page:

"The U.S. allows 50 times more vinclozolin on cherries as the E.U., and 100 times as much lindane on pineapples.

Canada fared no better: For permethrin on leaf lettuce and spinach, the Canadian and U.S. limit was 400 times higher than in Europe, and the Canadian cap on methoxychlor was 1,400 times the European limit.

Both countries also allow pesticides that have been banned not only in Europe but also in some developing countries, Boyd noted.

Methamidophos, for example, is permitted in Canada but banned in Indonesia and other developing nations."

a lot about SPP/NAU, among many things, is that it's not left-right/Liberal-Conservative/Democrat-Republican thing.

They have all been involved in it and are all involved in it.

And something Maud Barlow (at Council of Canadians) points out.

"To date, the only `stakeholders' involved or consulted in the SPP process have been representatives of big business. Apparently, when it comes to the future of North America, the public doesn't count. Nor do elected officials who, according to SPP documents, are only to be `briefed' after decisions have been made."

So, who will have 'oversight' of regulatory policy developed by the very same companies the regulations would or should apply to?

Melamine-Tainted Fish Meal Recalled in U.S. and Canada
A Canadian distributor of melamine-tainted fish food has recalled the feed from 198 U.S. fish farms and hatcheries and 57 Canadian fish farms and hatcheries, U.S. health officials reported Thursday.

Experts at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said they still do not know if any fish fed the tainted meal have made it to the U.S. market.
[...]

Ummmmm.... has any of it made it to the Canadian market?  Seems a relevant question for a Canadian paper.

Fish feed made with a contaminated Chinese ingredient was distributed to about 120 fish hatcheries and farms, roughly split between the United States and Canada, officials said Thursday.

I read a blurb about this "trade irritant" and was hoping someone here would pick up on it.  I can't really do diaries at work, so thanks for bringing it up. :-)

lower our standards because they are a 'trade irritant'. Guess we are no longer allowed to determine independant regulatory standards. Could environmental protection standards be next? Way to stand up for Canada.

What else could be a 'trade irritant'?
French language on packaging?
The metric system?
Our currency?
The border?

Time to invest in a super heavy-duty vegetable scrubber. There's going to be a whole lot more crap to wash off.

Don't worry 'bout washin' them veggies - the US medical system will take care of ya Frank.

That is as long as you pay your premiums and deductables and use US branded drugs.

You forgot one: spelling.

And about that French labeling?  It'll have to be replaced with Spanish - gotta pander to the black market labour pool while we scream for one official language.

Yes, I forgot the 'spelling'.

No more 'centre' or 'colour' or especially 'honour'.
