Return to Hypocrite Email Print

Do you get buried in wasteful crap like this? With all the parties roaring their stewardship commitment, doesn't this get a little exhausting? I  have taken to writing "return to hypocrite" on them, and then putting them back in the mailbox.

C'mon Jack. You send a ton of this stuff over and over to my home and business, addressed to people I never heard of and very long gone if they were ever here. The paper is partially recycled but there is still a very significant element of waste. There is never anything substantive inside, except a lot of the usual stuff we already know you have to say. Clean up your mailing list and cut back. Both. Please!

Hey Next Agenda guys, it wouldn't post my spiel because I hadn't typed 300 words but - sometimes thats all it takes. I do have a question though, I posed this at my site and the html limit on the pic width is 320, and that is specified within this post too, but not heeded by your software for some reason. Reduce it if you care to -I think that would be an improvement.  Cheers, ( I wonder if that is 300 words yet?)

It wasn't! Still wouldn't post! Are you sure you want that restriction? Anyway, I'm out of time. Maybe that did it.

That is annoying you guys. Maybe you could adjust that a little. Or not I guess. Your site. But sometimes a person has something to say that is only worthy of a brief post, and still worth posting.
declare this to be an 'Open Thread' diary then.

Might not be a half-bad idea to have one right now.

I know I should be posting a whole lot more. The Harpocrites just seem to keep offering up some new outrage daily. But honestly, I've almost gone numb right now. Thier chutzpah is breathtaking (i.e. Our Rules Don't Apply to Us), but I feel paralyzed at the moment.

I need a vacation.

Sorry when I put that together, the pic is smaller and at the top. I guess the html reads different at your site than mine - here it is just a mess. Should I take it down? I don't know. Gotta run for sure so I won't.

here and here.

The reason your code wouldn't  work her is that its not the same as the code used by scoop, which is our software. (I changed it for you)
All this is also found in the FAQ.
Please dont be offended, but this post would have made an excellent comment in one of the Open threads on the site. (look to the left there, 'Mint Julep', and they also appear on the front page a few times a week)
The diary length is a rule, because of issues we have had recently.

grassrootsbloggerdtcom raises a good point and presents his opinion succictly.  What's wrong with that?

If you want to promote participation perhaps a loosening of the editorial standards is worthy of contemplation.

This diarist is a good example of why I believe that being arbitrarily restrictive is a bad idea.  Most of the posts at his own blog fall short of 300 words and yet virtually every one of them is worthy of discussion -- if not shouting from the roof tops. He's obviously passionate and informed, let's not exclude him simply because he's not prolific.

There are people here that do an excellent job at doing follow up research on topics, perhaps this is a strength that should be built upon -- promoting a more collaborative approach rather than placing all the responsibility on the individual diarist.

An alternate idea: inviting this diarist to do a compendium work on a weekly basis rather than burying his thoughts and observations in an open thread somewhere.

Many of us simply do not have the time to devote to research and thought that meets the apparent minimal standards for diarists and as a result, observations, ideas and "connect the dots" type news items do not get communicated due to da rules.

just one asshat's opinion.

And what happened to Spanking Canadian Tire? I'd gotten some stuff together regarding the whole dolphin/tuna thing in support of an argument and... it was gone.

they'd answer my emails instead of clogging my mailbox with their crapola.

Just yesterday I got another flyer/pamphlet thingy from my Con MP.  Along with everybody in my building.  Most of them ended up in the trash can by the mailboxes.  What a waste.  I at least brought mine up and mocked and debunked it for a while before I ritualistically tore it into little pieces and put it in the recycling.

Nice thread guys. Well my point seems to have been well taken which was the reason for the exercise. Thanks for that.

And I'll make more of an effort to read the FAQ section in the future if I come to post here and have problems, I promise.

In general, I think I would agree with a minimum-word restriction but probably less than 300 words, especially if a pic is included like that one was - because, as we all know, it really did say at least a thousand. :-)

Looks to me like you just had a little rant against Jack.  Nothing too much substantive here.  Why not compare what other MPs/parties send out in terms of numbers and content value?

Looks like a perfect post for an open thread or comment on a related diary.

the two major parties in the US, and each party in each jurisdiction across the entire spectrum in Europe, and sift, triangulate, and juxtapose. Graphs and pie charts are in the offing, and a "waste material divided by overblown rhetoric squared..." equals... Yes, a  green b.s. index just might be computable. Now we're talking!

C'mon guys, in the scope of things its a small but worthwhile point I wanted to make with a pic and a couple of paragraphs.

What I had to say was: 'Jack I am getting 20 or 25 of these a year addressed to no one I know. How many tens of thousands of addresses across the country have this going on?
If it is in the tens of thousands, even at current recycle %'s, thousands of trees are being wasted on this.

I think that IS substantive and actionable, especially if the NDP happened to see it. And they did receive it.

If you want to expand the theme write a book or thesis be my guest. Sheesh.

Snark sliding into meta.  Meta overlaid with snark.  A comment that kinda comments on the point at hand but that has far more satire than comment.

Don't get me wrong - good satire - fairly made point.  Welcome to the grand game.  I like the points you are making ( exclusive of the meta ).  The meta is also valid, I just don't happen to agree with it.

The meat of your diary is 119 words, the rest is filler.  When, not if, when,  this site is more active a diary like this would push another diary off the ' recent diaries ' list.  The general lurker may then not be aware of a diary that had substantial content and numerous and incisive comments.  What he would have is your diary.  It makes a good point - it is a point worth making and the nub of a righteous rant.

It is truly a good comment in an open thread.  It would be seen by many.  It would get some comments and maybe start a discussion that takes a few tangents and educates many.  As a comment in an open thread it would not be seen for as long because the open thread would move down the page and out of 'first sight' faster than a diary in in the ' recent diaries ' list.  Such is life.

The rules are thought out and have been tested and critiqued to death on dKos.  I will give you that dKos is a vastly more active site and some of the dynamics there do not apply here, as yet.  By holding true to the functionality of the dkos model, this site, in the future and now, will be able to enforce rules with integrity.

If I had a vote, and neither you nor I do, I would say keep the 300 word requirement for a diary.  This isn't my site.  I, however, enjoy TNA immensely and would like to see it grow.  Perhaps some changes would help that goal, but I think it works well as it is.  I do appreciate you posting here and providing the link to your blog.

As I said, welcome.  I hope to hear more from you.

(( The above comment is 370 word { I tend to ramble } but doesn't fit the definition of a diary.  This and it's follow up would be a diary - 405 words between the two. ))

Ya I guess you're right.  Sorry i got my knickers in such a twist.  I'll spend a little on new blogs that I am using to hype my own site and get a feel for the lay of the land before I go off on them for not doing things like I do.

Rules are necessary, of course. But if the purpose of this site and every similar one is to advance progressive values, then user-friendly and flexible thinking would be a very good idea.

Today I posted four paragraphs about Harper allowing more pesticides on your food - with links to further info.

That should have been enough. It worked - if I wanted to let a few people know about that development, and move on with my day. It didn't belong in an open thread.

But while four paragraphs was easily enough to convey the message, it wasn't enough for the site itself.

I wager that restriction would discourage more people than me from wanting to post here.

If the site doesn't care whether I'm here fine, but I wonder how much of an overall impediment to growth that has been to this site.

Back to the purpose of the site - if it is to advance progressive values it should be at least willing to discuss and re-consider its rules from time to time, especially in search of th best way to encourage people to use it.

to be RIGHT!

You havent heard one thing anyone else has stated.

If you had been paying attention you would have looked in the past threads and realized that the minumum content rule is there for a reason.
That and the fact that a well thought out diary instead of a hurried, short, unresearched diary will earn you a lot more traffic to your site, which really seems to be the main gist of all you do here.
The Canadian Tire diary, wasnt even correct in its main premise, and could have used a lot more thought. This one could be fleshed out very easily.

I would suggest that for someone who considers themself to be such a progressive and wanting to be a part of a community you could at least read the FAQ about something like formatting.

We have all been VERY polite despite the fact that you dont seem to care. It would be good to receive that in kind.
