It's Official: Stockwell Day is an Idiot Email Print

Now I've been one of the few people left in Canada who didn't think Stockwell Day was a complete idiot.  I spent many years living in Alberta when he was a provincial cabinet minister, and to be honest, he wasn't that bad at it.  Sure, once he got on the National stage his lunacy began to show, but I still pulled for him.  He was like the little engine that couldn't--you just have to feel sorry for him.

But no longer.

Today, our esteemed Minister of Public Safety opened his big gob, and publicly scoffed at the idea of blowback for our ill-concieved Afghanistan adventure.

Saying that Taliban threats of suicide bombings in Canada are a "PR move on behalf of a terror organization", Day seems to believe that our border security is strong enough to repel any possibility of some pissed-off fanatic Muslims entering Canada and detonating themselves.

Now, I'm not saying we as a nation should descend into hysteric persecution of Islamic minorities, or torture every immigrant who hits our shores while wearing a tan (I'll leave those sorts of things to the Yanks).  That said, I'm not sure that down-playing the threat of terrorism here at home is a good idea either.

Add to this the mess the RCMP is apparently in, and I wonder just how well our ability to investigate potential terror attacks is holding up.

Then again, we could always follow the lead of the US and bomb anyone who 'terrorizes' us.  After all, we're a Country with a "history of responding to cries in the global village when people are being abused and tortured and murdered."

And the best way to do that is to invade their country and kill them, right?

Sadly, I fear that Day's pronouncement and Canadian complacency (the belief that US Security will protect us) will bring somesort of terrorist attack, which Harper will lamely try to turn into our 9/11 to gain complete control of the reigns of governenment.

But Stock, you idiot, you've already set before us evidence that should that be the case, Harper and Co. LIHOP.

Gosh, I feel safer already.

After all, these loons don't seem to care about the Earth (our the country for that matter)

put himself out there.

I always try to be sure an read his weekly column (Wednesdays) in the Penticton Western News. Never fails to be at least one bizarro statement per column.

Here's the latest - his commentary on the enviroment file at the recent G8 summit.

Unfortunately PWN doesn't archive this stuff and so the column tend to fade away in due time.

However, BigCityLib has done a terrific job of compiling Doris' Greatest Hits (Que Sera, Sera anyone?) right over here, with lots of linky goodness.

After that read does everyone feel safer knowing that Stockboy is in charge of our National Public Safety? Especially with this little tidbit?

Here's a picture of Stockwell Day, Canada's Minister of Public Safety Minister, meeting with members of the MQM (Muttahida Qaumi Movement), a Pakistani political party whose Canadian chapter has endorsed the CPoC in both 2004 and 2006. And here's a sample of the kind of fund-raising policies that have landed the MQM a spot on The MIPT Terrorism Knowledge Base (TKB) list of international terror organizations.

That "column" was practically incoherent.  Better not quit your day job, Doris.  You suck at writing.

...much confidence in Stockwell Day protecting our Public Safety as I have in Chuck Strahl protecting the Canadian Wheat Board.

I do believe there will be a Taliban or Al Qaeda terrorist attack in Canada.  I don't live in fear of it or think that civil liberties should be short-changed to try and prevent the attack.

Harper will spin his failure to prevent the attack into .... I hate to imagine.

Good diary there, Whytwolf.

... I think he could be, if he doesn't kill it first.  I do like the reduction of hooking 'n' holding.  I don't agree with Don Cherry on the matter of vastly reducing the fighting in hockey would be bad for the game.

Taliban militants have seized control of a district in Afghanistan's volatile south after a clash that killed five people, including the local police chief and the political leader, a deputy governor says.

The border guards can't even stop an armed American fugitive fleeing north.

I love the Republican "winning hearts and minds" and the allusion the the "last throes of insurgency".  Feh.

"The Taliban are aware we are slowly winning the battle for the hearts and minds of the people of Afghanistan," said Day.

So, does "slowly" mean like, in the next 100 years or so?

Stockwell (or Doris) is indeed an idiot though I was watching CNN and their "terrorism expert" ,British Peter Bergen, did note that the majority of the suicide bombers shown looked like typical Pashtun villagers who wouldn't have much of a chance of passing through border security.

They did show the one guy who could speak English and I don't think it is ever helpful to take threats lightly.

It seems to be a Republican (USA and Canada) trait to laugh off or otherwise ignore real threats (911 warning from Richard Clarke)and trumpet lesser ones (Saddam Hussein).  I'm thinking of Bush saying, after previously vowing to bring OBL in dead or alive, that he didn't think too much about bin Laden or where he is now.  Wtf?

While the neocons are running the show in the US and here in Canada, we are in fact becoming MORE of a target than we were.

All the rhetoric that they spew about "hating us for our freedoms" is in fact only inflaming it.

Add to that that there are two frachises of fundamentalist twits, the Christian and the Muslim branches (a small percentage, but the scariest percentages of both religions)having a pissing contest about who is RIGHT!
They are so alike, its scary. And as always Darksyde got it so right.
